On the days of Indian rituals and religious festivals, vegetarian food is prepared at home. There are households who do not have onions and garlic. Thus, the choice becomes limited about what to cook.
The most common dishes for Navaratri are:
Sabudana puris and vadas which are made of tapioca
Sabudana kheer- Pudding made of tapioca
Sabudana khichdi- Made from tapioca
Vrat ke chawal- The rice that is made during fasting
Singhare ka halwa- Water chestnut pudding.
Lauki halwa- Pudding made from Bottle gourd
Vegetable rice cutlets- cutlets made of mixed vegetables and rice.
Below are videos where Manjula shows how to prepare these dishes for Navratri in her kitchen
Tomorrow shall mark the tenth day of Ashwin in the Hindu lunisolar calendar. The first nine days being celebrated as Navaratri. This Hindu festival is celebrated across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Dussehra or Vijayadashami marks the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasur, the demon. Durga Puja ends on this day with the immersion of idols. People visit each other’s house and exchange gifts. The saffron-colored Marigold are particularly associated with this festival and sold in abundance during this festive period. They are used for worship and decorating workplaces and homes.

In northern India, mainly Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and western Bihar, there is a tradition to plant barley seeds in earthen pots on the first day of Navratri. The sprouts on the tenth day, Dussehra, are used as symbols of luck. Many plays and dramas based on Ramayana are performed during this period known as ‘Ramlila’. The effigies of Ravana filled with firecrackers containing phosphorus are burned on Dussehra. The ceremonial burning of effigies of Ravana celebrates the victory of Rama. Dussehra is a festival of victory of Good over Evil.
Continuing with my food trucks journey, not to be left behind is Delhi. Here is a list of food trucks in Delhi NCR.
EGGjactlyTheFoodTruck– The cuisines served are American, Fast Food. The timings are 6 PM to 11 PM
Great food, pleasant and efficient service, and unbelievable value for money. Tried the Belgian waffle with a scoop of ice cream, and the fiery hot chicken wings in devil sauce. The waffle was rather lovely, warm, with bananas, chocolate sauce and a dollop of ice cream which melted real quick.
The White and Red painted Lalit Food truck stands near Hotel Lalit in all its glory. A little hard to locate, to describe its precise location, I’ll say it’s near the mandir that is located there & World Trade Tower, Barakhamba Road. Ask around and you may just locate it easily.
The Jamaican Jerk burger had a delicious minced chicken patty which had oodles of flavour in itself and couple that with the amazing dressing of lettuce onions and Jalapenos with flavoured mayonnaise and some very different sauces. The bun was probably the best in that whole package.
In the last few months, food trucks have sprung up at different locations in the city of Mumbai. As a local food truck owner states “People eat from food trucks not just for the cuisine, but for the unique experience it offers. Also, unlike restaurants, you don’t have to wait too long to get your meal. Plus, these compact and low-cost mobile eateries are more hygienic as compared to street food”.
In the last post, I covered food trucks in Bangalore. Below is the list of the gastronomical trail of food trucks across the city of Mumbai.
Fogo, Mumbai – Serving hot delicious food at Kandarpada (Dahisar west).
The flavour of Herb & Olives brings out the best in Salamis’
Big Bite Burrito is one of the famous food truck in Vasai. This food truck is famous for their Mexican food items. The hygiene is at its best, this food truck is always crowded with the people in the evening, the service is quick. There are many unique dishes in both veg as well in non–veg like Cheesy Chicken Quesadilla, Cheesy Chimichanga etc. The best part is that they are upgrading their menu on a daily basis. I would like to recommend to everyone to try at least one dish.
