Foods which strengthen our bones

When we see elderly people walking upright and even see them jogging in the nearby park, it leaves us guessing – what is it that makes them so much fitter and stronger at such an age? On the contrary we also see young people around us, unable to move properly or limp or find it difficult to make normal movements.

Well! The answer to it is efforts and good health, especially taking good care on our bones, right from the beginning – a healthy balanced diet which consists of foods that promote bone health right from our early age. Yes, it is true that as we age, bone health becomes a concern.

Bones are an important part of our body constitution and we should maintain and keep them healthy by feeding them with the right food and ensue their longevity. Poor health of our bones can cause certain conditions like osteoporosis and rickets and increase the risk of damage or break from injuries as we start aging. By eating a healthy and balanced diet we are able to provide all the nutrients required for healthy bones.

Foods that help maintain a healthy bone structure and strengthen our skeleton:

When it is about building and strengthening our bone structure there are two essential nutrients involved – calcium and vitamin D, wherein, calcium aids in support bone and teeth structure, vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium and bone growth. The process should start at an early age, so that as we age our bones does not become brittle and prone to breaking and damages.

  • Dark Leafy Greens and Veggies: It’s not any gimmick. Try to teach and make greens your favourite choice when it is about foods. They are just what the bones needs – the bone-building nutrients (Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamin K). Some good ones are spinach, dandelion, kale and Swiss chard.

Nuts and Seeds: Bones are not just hard and solid structures, they are living and have cells too and fluids. The bone cells break and again builds up and that is how they heal after braking and also remain strong. The moment we think of bones, calcium is the first thing that comes to our mind. Our entire skeleton is made up of 50% calcium, but at the same time it is other minerals too that is important.

Manganese in one such mineral that resides on our bones and its good source is seeds – pumpkin, Brazil Nuts and other seeds.

Walnuts are enriched with alpha linoleic acid and omega-3 fatty acids and helps decrease chances of bone breakdown.

  • Yoghurt and other Dairy products: Has high contents of proteins and good gut bacteria, and thereby promoting good health. It is also enriched with high quantity of calcium. Best is to go for low-fat yoghurt which serves as a healthy snack and keeps you fuller. Greek yoghurt is enriched with the additional goodness of extra proteins.

Milk is a good source of calcium and vitamin D and helps to delay the loss of bone mass. It is also fortified. Choose non-fat milk for a better outcome.

  • Fatty Fish like Salmon and Tuna: Mainly known for its high contents of omega-3 fatty acids, certain species of salmon like to sockeye salmon is high in vitamin D also. Tuna is another good source of vitamin D and calcium. Make sure you add these two in your diet to fulfil your daily dose of the much needed vitamin and calcium.
  • Beans: Especially black, white, kidney and pinto beans provides with a good dosage of vitamin D and some amount of calcium. Also people who eat beans in appropriate quantities in their diet, have lower risks of heart diseases, obesity and even cancers. Enjoy them the way you like.

Bone health has been a universal health concern for all ages. If its care and maintenance are started at a younger age, you will be one of those who people will admire when you jog around in the nearby park at an older age. Diet and supplements are the best way to keep feeding the bones with the right nutrients.

Imagine a household bereft of a woman; imagine your world deprived of one. With international women’s day just having gone by, it’s time to doff one’s hat to the various roles women play.

So, like every year, while International Women’s Day was celebrated worldwide on March 8, having been instituted way back in 1909, the truth is its purpose is as relevant today as even before.

Women everywhere need to be treated as equals no doubt, but there is also a need to be recognised for their strength and achievements.

Balance for better

Every year the campaign theme is a sort of call-to-action, one emphasizing the need to create a more gender-balanced world, one that is proactive on all levels with women’s empowerment, whether pertaining to economic, social or political issues. ‘Balance for better’ is the theme of 2019. Whether the significance of this call is all about civil awareness, women and girl recognition, anti-sexism or anti-discrimination, it is a day that celebrates womanhood globally.

While International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the progress women worldwide have made in different fields, commend and applaud those few who had the foresight and determination of their vision and extraordinary courage, let us not forget that at the epicentre of every unit exists a woman, one who is the driving force behind those wheels of that well-oiled machinery called domestic bliss. The roles she plays in one lifetime as a mother, sister, wife or daughter is cause enough for celebration, but coupled with her juggling abilities to hold down that fort of household responsibilities along with the demands of a workplace, in my books her achievement are way up there!

Imagine a household bereft of a woman, imagine your world deprived of one!

Deprived of Status

While Woman’s Day celebrates women’s history, her emancipation, often highlighting key events, achievements and milestones to raise awareness, promote equal opportunities for her in all walks of life, the sad truth is that often in certain parts of the world and, especially in certain cultures, women are not accredited as being equal with men, thus depriving them of basic rights and status.

There is enough evidence now to support the claim that a gender-diverse workplace does indeed produce real benefits. Studies also show that a gender-diverse workplace is not only good for financial returns, employee engagement, innovation and reducing turnover but most gender-diverse businesses also resonate with a wider customer base. Yet, women are still deprived of the opportunity.

And while we as women raise flags and protestations, seek wider platforms and march the streets demanding equal status from the other half of the population, the question here is should it really be only about gender disparity? Is it then fair to lay all that ire and disproportion blame squarely on men alone?

Are not injustices, inequalities and unfair treatment being met out to women for generations, sadly from their own kind? Think back on all the times when you have been discriminated against and chances are it could well be that dragon-lady a.k.a your boss, a colleague from work or that friend who has hidden agenda; you should well have been mistreated by that daughter-in-law or mother-in-law.

So while we demand equality from the other half of the gender bender in matters of education, employment, inheritance, marriage, politics and recently, in field of religion too, should we not be demanding fairness from our mothers; patience from our mother-in-law, understanding and compassion from our female friends?

The need of the hour is to clean up the imbalances in our own gender-centric homes, with a whole bunch of self-realisation and inward reflection. While we strive to enhance equivalence from the rest of the world, we also need to improve our position “as women amongst women”.

We must consciously strive towards a more complete view of womanhood, gentled with gender infused an understanding of love and respect. Be a woman of worth with your own kind, be the first to appreciate another’s success, the one to applaud the loudest at another’s triumph.

Be the kind of woman that senses a cry for help from another, much before her complete meltdown. The kind of woman who provides support to her tribe and not one that creates divides. Be the type of woman that sets a trend not just by her fashion sense but as a result of her commonsense. Be the kind of woman who is self-sufficient in her own capabilities, achievements and skills but is never shy to ask for help when needed.

Be the woman who succeeds and triumphs after every fall, the kind who fixes another’s crown silently but, most of all, is the kind of woman who sets an example, the kind that someday your daughter may want to emulate.

So while the world celebrated this international woman’s day with a campaign theme of ‘Balance for better’, let us endeavour to make a difference with no gender agendas. Let’s work instead on being women of substance, beautiful inside out, strong in spirit, determined in grit, to be balanced for ourselves with a better understanding of life and a kinder compassion for the world we live in, regardless of being men or women.

This talk will be part of the Multipolis Mumbai Series that decodes the past while looking to the future and finding novel ways of engaging, interacting with, and reenergizing the city that we love! The second round seeks to plumb new depths and unearth more fascinating nuggets about the ever-surprising Mumbai! This series began and had a successful run in 2012 and has been revived in June 2017.

The second iteration goes deeper with the re-haul of historic precincts, the role of the business families of Bombay, and looking at the city through a child’s eyes. Discussions around how art institutions and practitioners in the city are harnessing the power of tech, how poets and women writers engage with and write about the city, about wildlife in the city and the role of technology in the protection of local biodiversity, and a discussion delving into the virtual and digital world of gaming, its relationship with art and the gaming culture in the city.

Workshops closely looked at celebrated Mumbai architecture (namely Art Deco, Indo-Saracenic, and Victorian Gothic). Panels on the role of philanthropic individuals and institutions and 6:00 PM mapping towns within the city, as well a discussion on heritage textiles, interior finishes, and the Swadeshi movement in the context of Mumbai. Most recently, a closer look at the Maritime history of Mumbai and its relationship with the Sea.

Join in for a fascinating look into the unique role of women in Mumbai’s theatrical culture in celebration of International Women’s Day.

Five Important Facts That You Should Know About Dubai.

Dubai! This city has always fascinated me and I’d read up everything that was written about it. I’d read up on how the glitter of gold from the gold souqs can be seen from afar. I’d read up on how Dubai’s gastronomic excellence has given rise to an annual Food Festival. I’d read up on the country’s unique past and its overnight metamorphosis into a leading tourist destination.

To me, Dubai is all about fabulous manmade marvels, wealth, glamour, gold and food. Then there came the time when just reading up on Dubai was no longer enough. I just had to experience this amazing city for myself. So I gathered up my few pennies and pounds and flew there. I loved my trip. And I learned a lot of stuff I wish I’d known earlier. Here they are.

Dubai Isn’t All That Tolerant – Despite Appearances

Let’s put the bare facts out on the table. Dubai is an Islamic nation and therefore very conservative. Don’t be fooled by pictures of half-naked tourists. There are very clear dos and don’ts, as I learned to my expense.

  • No, you don’t need to purchase a burkini – your bikini or tiny shorts will do, but only at the beach.
  • When you’re at the mall or a similar public place, be sure to cover your shoulders decently.
  • Public Displays of Affection are a no-no, NO matter where you are. So hands off.
  • Don’t mouth off while in Dubai. Don’t drop the F-bomb, or any expletive for that matter, while in public. Hell, you could get a detention for a year or even be fined about 10,000 AED. Now that’s way too much to pay for cussing. Seriously. Be careful never to insult a public official, coz you’ll be paying up a lot more. Be careful not to use expletives when you’re online, either. While you’re at it, don’t mouth off about Islam or the ruling family.
  • Don’t touch someone’s Qur’an if you are not Muslim. Yes I know, you just wanted to feel that expensive leather. Just don’t.
  • Don’t make any rude gestures – keep your hands by your side, if you’re the digitally-voluble kind. A friend of mine was herded off to the police station because he made a rude gesture. He was let off with a warning, but he could have been imprisoned.
  1. Don’t Visit Dubai During Ramadan

Ramadan is the holy month; no one eats or drinks anything, not even water, between dawn and dusk. And that goes for you too, tourist. You want to eat, sneak some snacks in advance into your hotel room and much noiselessly, please. I found a couple of dedicated restaurants, behind covered walls and partitions that served during the day. Don’t even chew gum in public during Ramadan. When in Rome and all that, you know…..

  • You Don’t Have To Be Wealthy To Enjoy Dubai

Yes, you can Dubai on a budget. I did. That’s one of the things to know before visiting Dubai. It’s like this – the city’s gearing up to host Expo 2020. Several mid-market hotel chains are coming up, totally millennial-friendly and all that. There’s the Hilton Garden Inn and Rove for examples. Also, Dubai hostels and Airbnb accommodations are quite good. I stayed at an apartment in Deira, rooming up with a couple more tourists. It was cool, fairly cheap and honestly, I spent more on food. Now I know better, of course. Next time I visit Dubai, I’ll stick to cheap eateries in Deira, especially the ones on Al Muraqqabat Road and Al Rigga Road.

There’s just one thing that really stumped me, in terms of cost – the attractions. But I found a way around that too. I just looked up Groupon for coupons and discounts, and hit pay dirt more than once. I stayed in Dubai for a month, so I made good use of The Entertainer App. Here’s something else – I didn’t enjoy Dubai any less because I avoided expensive attractions. I chose rather to traipse through Old Dubai, took abra cruises and window shopped. I explored Souq Madinat and the Global Village, and a host of other free attractions.

  • Dubai Isn’t Just All Glamour – There’s A Deep-Seated Culture Too!

From the outside, it looks as though Dubai was about the Burj al Arab, Burj Khalifa, the Palm Islands or the immense shopping malls. No. Dubai is so much more than that. An Arab friend showed me a rich culture, a beautiful blend of Arab, Islamic and Bedouin cultures. I was spellbound by the narrow cobbled streets and old homes built of black coral in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – real black coral!

I found the Etihad Museum and Dubai Museum true delights – learned so much about Dubai’s past as a fishing and pearl-diving village. I participated in a no-holds-barred Q & A at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre of Cultural Understanding as well. You won’t believe the kind of questions some people asked on the Emirati culture!

Of course, I just had to browse the fragrant spice souqs of Bur Dubai, and man was it a learning experience or what! They expected me to bargain, and I realized bargaining is a way of life here. I had some cool fun haggling, shaking my head and throwing up my hands like a native and finally paying much less than I thought I should. Dubai is a heck of a cool city – absolutely worth your tourist visa Dubai.

  • You Don’t Have To Suffer A Dry Vacation!

Yep, Dubai is not dry! And yes, there are strict rules with regard to alcohol. If you have a fender bender after a single glass of wine, you’ll still go to jail. It’s like – you shouldn’t drink, you’re not encouraged to drink, and yet drink is available. There’s plenty of alcohol at licensed bars and restaurants attached to hotels. Dubai bars do have happy hours – thank the good Lord. Most bars have Ladies Nights on Tuesdays as well, when women get free drinks. Plus, there’s that very reliable Dubai institution – the Friday all-you-can-eat-and-drink brunches. Note though – you cannot buy alcohol in Dubai unless you have a licensed resident. Best tip (and I am terribly grateful to that friendly guy at the airport for this) is that you can buy any amount of alcohol at the airport duty- free and drink in your hotel room. NO issues. What happens in your room stays in your room.

And those are my 5 things to know before you visit Dubai. There’s one bonus point born out of my experiences though – Dubai is a real foodie’s haunt! The Food Festival in February simply rocks. Dubai’s multicultural mix means you get to try every cuisine known to the world. There are budget-friendly ethnic eateries, fine dining French restaurants and all the way to bespoke Michelin-starred high-flying restaurants. Of course, you can always rob a bank and dine at the Burj al Arab. That’s something for the grandkids!
